I feel anything and everything in life can inspire a writer to write something. A mere comment can plant a seed in a writers mind and the next thing you know it's forcing you to sit down and write. I'm sure my fellow writing friends know exactly what I'm saying. In fact the desire and need to write that thought out can strike at anytime. That's why many of us have small notebooks, voice recorders or something to record these seeds of inspiration out on. There have been many times I'm at work when a glimmer of a great idea comes to me, so yes I will stop working and write.
What I've learned last week is that it isn't always good to tell someone they inspired you to write something. Maybe I just went about it in the wrong way, or should have given the person more details behind what was written right away. But I ended up losing a friend due to letting this person know they had inspired me to write something I felt was the best romantic poem I ever wrote. I guess the person thought it had been completely written with them in mind when it wasn't. Lot's of people had entered my mind while I wrote it, but my now ex-friend had planted the seed of the idea in my head when mentioning their plans for the weekend to me. There's two lessons here. One is to make sure you explain all details of what and why you wrote something when letting someone know they inspired you to write something. And two if your the person who inspired a writer to write something ask questions of the writer, don't just jump to conclusions, especially if you think to dump a friendship due to your assumptions.
I find it interesting that the writing quote for today says: "Celebrate every writing success and never lose your sense of wonder about each opportunity." This hits me in two ways right now. The first being I was celebrating my writing success with this person, because they inspired a beautiful piece of writing. And it's too bad that person didn't see it that way.
The second being I feel writers have doubts about their abilities. Maybe even those writers that are already published. They might worry that they can't write in another genre as well as they wrote in the one they were published in. Or they wrote a best selling series and worry that their next series of books won't do as well. So all of us writers, published or not, need to remember to celebrate every piece of writing we do and be happy with every writing oppertunity that knocks on our doors. All I know is I still look at some of my best writing and I'm still in a awe that I wrote it.
Now go out get inspired by the world around you, your friends comments and life in general. Write those precious seeds of inspiration down. Then celebrate those writing successes and oppertunities. Because we as writers are special and we all need to remember that, since our creative writing talents are a gift from God.
