I heard this in regards to the movie “The Kings Speech.” And I recall having a slight stutter when I was younger and had to take a special class once a week to help correct it. We did those silly rhymes like ‘Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers…’ and ‘Sally sold seafood down by the sea shore’ – I probably got that one wrong, but I think you get which one I meant to write. Finding ones voice isn’t always easy, but once you do find it the world opens up to you and if you felt shy, you don’t feel shy any longer.
Through the years I found my voice in many more ways. I was in the ninth grade girl’s choir and actually sang a couple of solos. My uncle Benny Lombardi insisted that my sister and I sang to him every time we went to visit him. Singing was and still is a great pleasure for me to do, even if I might not be as good a singer as I was in my youth.
And now for about nine years now I’ve been looking for my writer’s voice. I’ve written quite a few things in during those nine years each one a little better than the last. Even though some of the things I wrote in the earlier stage was pretty good too. I’m learning how I see the world and how to describe what I see, touch, smell, hear, so my readers can see my world through their eyes – so to speak. Each writer has different ways of putting a scene together and when you read their works you can tell by the nuances and turn of phrase that it was written by a certain writer. That is the writers voice you are experiencing.
Each writer can look at something and write something completely different, even though it’s the same thing that inspired what was written. Take for example an old wilted rose in a crystal vase. An entire novel, short story or poem could be written just from that one simple object. And each voice would be different.
Now I will take all that I’ve learned and wrap it into this project. I just hope my plot summary is returned soon, so I can get started on it.
