“Hey would you girls like to go bowling?” Reese asked as he and John joined Delana and Heidi at the table.
“Bowling?” Delana asked
Reese gave her a shoulder hug and a kiss on the cheek then whispered, “How are you doing now?”
“I’m hanging in there,” Delana replied, “So why bowling?”
“I thought it’d help keep your mind off of… you know,” Reese said.
“Well I’m down for anything,” John said.
“You’re always ready to do anything that would keep you from studying,” Heidi said.
“Of course, I can’t help it I like to have fun,” John said. He smiled at Delana. “Besides I know Delana needs to have some fun tonight.”
“Alright! Let’s go bowling. Just don’t laugh when I keep throwing gutter balls,” Delana said as she stood to get ready to leave.
They all piled into Reese’s car. It was a short drive to the Cosmic Bowling Lanes. And before Delana knew what she got herself into she found herself on the bowling lane in a pair of colorful bowling shoes holding a ten pound bowling ball. She took a deep breath to calm her nerves then proceeded to line up her shot. In three fluid steps Delana launched the ball down the lane. She watched it roll toward the ten pins and was amazed when the ball made it to them and knocked six of them down. She turned to her friends and grinned. “I can’t believe I just did that.”
Reese laughed. “You’re not done yet. You have to try and knock the remaining pins down.”
Delana stuck her tongue out at Reese. “I know. I just wanted to celebrate this small accomplishment before I make a total fool out of myself.” She picked her ball up off the ball return and lined up to try and get a spare. She managed to knock down a couple more pins and felt proud of herself for not messing up too badly. She gave Heidi a high five as she walked past her to go sit by Reese.
Heidi didn’t do much better than Delana did on her first bowling frame. They were all laughing when they reached the tenth frame, since none of them did that great a job. But that didn’t matter to them. All that mattered was having some fun and keeping Delana’s mind off of her mom. Before starting the next game they decided to take a break and have some pizza which was the other thing Cosmic Lane’s was really good at providing.
The next game they all did a little better at, but still not good enough for any of them to think to quit going to their college classes and become a professional bowler. After Reese drove them all back to the MIT campus, Heidi and John headed back to the student center and left Delana and Reese alone so they could talk.
